Well it's official! I have been promoted to the role of "Director"!!!!

Emily Barber Director

See above for proof.

The term "Female Director" comes so heavily weighted to me. Disregarding the political and social leanings it typically infers, it also means that I have a "female's point of view". Though I don't think that statement is inaccurate, I feel the social understanding means I see the world in mini skirts, make up, and romance. For example, the first ever commercial I was able to direct was for a beauty brand. I'm very grateful for my first ever, big opportunity, but I'm equally concerned it's going to put me in this box of femininity.

I'm not sure if there is a human in existence that would describe me as romantic or even very feminine. In truth, I'm very envious of the women in my life who slay their make up game (see this gorgeous example) but that just is not me.

I like wearing heels but I also like lifting heavy things at the gym. I adore women's make up but when I have a brush in my hand, I somehow end up looking like a clown. Ultimately, I'm afraid this new title means Give all the flowery, pretty stuff to Emily and let everyone else take the sport and tech brands. Though I am a far ways off from that being a reality, I also want to position myself in a way that allows me the greatest chances of success. And to me, that means speaking up for the things I want and wearing my personal brand like a finger print.

So, I'm in the works of finding myself a mentor, which has been more difficult than I thought. I think because Chicago is such a small community there aren't many female filmmaker groups to reach out to. But, I'm determined to find a bad ass boss to learn from, grow from, and challenge me on all things I need to know to be ready for this industry. I'll let you know how it goes!

Side note - I also have a spec commercial dancing around my head that I'm very excited about. I'm hoping to pitch it at our next creative meeting. Wish me luck!
